Terms of Employment: 194 or 196 days, depending on experience within WCSD
Position Criteria:
- Valid Iowa Teaching License
- B.A. Degree in an Educational Field of Study
- Elementary teacher certification
- K-12 English as a Second Language endorsement
Performance Criteria:
- Experience teaching in the elementary setting; specifically primary level; is preferred.
- Experience in the implementation of multiple ESOL instructional delivery models
- Experience working with EL Newcomers and understanding cultural dynamics when helping them acclimate to the school system
- Experience in supporting families as they acclimate to the school system
- Knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies for beginning readers and proven record of successful implementation
- Proven record of successful growth in students in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Successful experience implementing a guided reading model utilizing prompting, feedback, and scaffolding of support for student growth, particularly with emergent readers
- Experience using running records, and formative assessments to make data driven decisions
- Proven record of successful collaboration with multiple grades levels and teams in order to meet student needs
- Record of recent staff development/on-going education and knowledge of current research
- Successful experience supervising associates/para-professionals and utilizing their support for meeting student needs
- Provide direct instruction for EL's in both a pull-out and push-in/collaboration model
- Maintain building/district ESOL files
- Willingness and experience with providing professional development to staff in the area of ESOL best practices
- Provide ongoing support to teachers as they implement instruction to English Language Learners in their classrooms
- Facilitate weekly meetings with ESOL para-professionals; guide the planning and lesson delivery of the para-professionals
- Participate in the Waukee Problem Solving Process to help design interventions to best meet student need
- Actively participate in all IEP meetings involving EL's
- Administer annual ESOL assessments to all EL's as required by state or district policy
- Administer placement tests to all incoming EL's; assessment will be a guide in determining language acquisition level and, therefore, amount and type of ESOL instruction needed
- Maintain lists of translators/interpreters and is the first contact for buildings when translation/interpretation is needed; a list of on-call translators/interpreters will be available for help during the registration process, "emergency" meetings, etc.
- Assist, through interpreter, to ascertain an EL's academic achievement/history; review past school records, conduct interviews, etc.
- Seek out grant opportunities to grow the ESOL department
- Help to oversee translation of various printed district documents into the languages/dialects represented in our district
